Kick me when I'm down, Connecticut

It has been 45 days since I received child support.  Support Enforcement still has not called me back.  The jobs I applied to have not called me back.  Our 55 degree weather decided to go away and leave snow in its place.  I need oil (amongst other things).

There was a small light called the Federal Tax Return.  I subbed for part of the year, nothing substantial, and because I am exempt on my W2, having 9 dependants, I knew I wasn't getting much back.  $394 to be exact, due yesterday in direct deposit.

This morning it wasn't there.  The IRS website tells me it was confiscated to pay for back state taxes.  2006 state taxes, when I was still married.  January 1, 2007 is when tbj left, then he quickly filed the federal return, got back $9900, forged my name, took his girlfriend to the Dominican Republic, bought her a diamond ring, and never paid the state tax that was due, and now 6 years later has accrued interest and penalties and totals $6000.

Of course I was getting notices about this all along.  Which I of course brought up a million plus times in court, which I of course called and talked to the state IRS people about, which I also of course wrote and sent in documents stating how I didn't work in 2006, or the 20 years before that, how I was an innocent spouse, and how I had been fighting for my half of the $9900 for years to no avail.

And of course the glorious state of CT, who won't give me any aid in raising the 8 minor children I alone am responsible for, takes my $394 that would give us heat for March to pay tbj's bill.

Are you surprised?

  1. It is so mind-boggling to me how this is all legal. I'm sorry, Kristen.

  3. Have you tried calling Sen. Blumenthal's office? I miss him being Atty Gen because he really got things done for the people of CT. Or try the new AG's office? I'm sorry to say I don't know his name. Or what about your state rep/senator to Hartford?

  4. That does sound very frustrating. I just finished a memoir called Innocent Spouse which talked about similar tax issues, except in her case she was a widow...

I hope things get better for you.

  5. You don't get earned income credit? I know quite a few people with many children that get back more than they pay in.

  6. @ Rabbit-I was told once by tbj that Blumenthal was a good friend of tbs (his father). I don't know if I believe but I do know that I wrote several letters to Blumenthal in the beginning and was completely ignored.
@ Traci - I didn't get earned income credit because I didn't earn enough income. And if I did, the state would have sucked it up, anyway.

  7. I would think that your divorce decree should outline who is responsible for tax liabilities. Can you contact the IRS and forward a copy of the decree? Contact your attorney and have them invovled. You need legal representation. I hate to even suggest this, but have you considered contacting the Dr. Phil Show? I'd say Steve Wilkos, who is in CT, but he has a rather seedy undertone. How about any EWTN or Catholic based shows of a news type? To not be able to have jsutice is not fair. Laura

  8. I wanted to add to your list of suggested movies: Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell and Lark Rise to Candleford by Flora Thompson (both are on PBS). Have you watched Downtown Abbey? I have enjoyed these immensely.

  9. Paper trail, if still no reponse then start by calling every Monday, one week later, start calling evey Monday & Wednesday. Still no respnse after another week, call every Monday, Wednesday & Friday. Always polite, leave a message, ALWAYS DOCUMENT TIME & DATES. If no response after the 3rd week ask person taking messages for a direct number to their supervisor if you cannot speak to them immediatley. Keep calling, keep documenting, keep at them, that is what they get paid for. Be a pain until you get to speak to the people who can assist you. Always have you paper trail, letters, phone calls, office visits, documented by date & time with results of your call/letter/visit. I use this 'program' with anything that does not give me results. Be persistant.

  10. I'm flabbergasted that the American 'system' is this way...someone is sitting in a cubicle somewhere, pushing papers and not realizing that on the other side of their paper pile, there is a REAL mother ,with REAL children and REAL 'needs'.
I'll offer you up today in my prayers and ask Blessed MOther to wrap you in her mantle...

  12. Ugh *headdesk* to the "family connection." OK, then I would try your state senators/reps for some overall assistance. I agree with Unknown's advice as well.

My husband works with criminals who are trying to re-enter the real world--the other day he needed to call the state's dental insurance plan for a client who had an emergency, but no proof of coverage. Took him an HOUR to find someone who would 1) pick up the phone, 2) listen to what he actually had to say instead of transferring him around, and 3) could actually HELP him. Gotta love our state and its ineptitude!

But in happier comments, I love the new photo too!
